Here is my story…
I started my career in Human Resources and worked for several big multinational companies in London. I worked really hard and steadily progressed up the career ladder, eventually reaching leadership level. However, I never truly felt that I had found my place in the world. I suffered from a lack of self-confidence and constantly compared myself to others who I thought were smarter and better than me, and who seemed to progress their careers at a faster rate than I did.
Despite having that ever-present self-doubt, I grabbed every opportunity I could to further my career and had some incredible experiences along the way. I travelled extensively across Europe and Africa with my work and also spent a year living and working in Jamaica. I didn’t realise it at the time but these experiences did wonders for my resilience and I slowly started to realise that I was a lot stronger mentally than I had thought I was.
But that niggling feeling that I was just a small cog in a big wheel kept eating away at me. I just couldn’t get away from that sense that I didn’t fit the conventional corporate mould. It felt like my self-worth was attached to whether I was doing well at work and it suddenly dawned on me that it didn’t have to be that way.
It was at that moment that I decided to take the leap from the comfort of a regular income and set up my own HR consultancy business. The liberating feeling I got from being my own boss was quite incredible. It was not without risk and a healthy dose of fear but I finally felt in control of my career…and I loved it!
I ran a successful HR consultancy for over 18 months and life was pretty good but over time I started to feel that I wanted to move away from office work and build a living that revolved around helping others. I decided to train to become a Pilates instructor as well as qualifying as a life coach. The training for both of these disciplines was extremely demanding (especially as I was still running the HR consultancy) but I felt that I had the potential to carve out a career for myself that, not only would I love and feel extremely passionate about, but would also have a positive impact on the lives of others.
After qualifying, I decided to take the boldest leap I had ever made. I stopped the HR consultancy work, packed up my worldly belongings and moved (on my own) from London to Bristol to set up two home-based businesses: an equipment Pilates studio and a life coaching business. It took a lot of determination and some pretty big financial risks to make my dream become a reality but now I wouldn’t have it any other way.
And here I am today. I’m doing two jobs that I love, making a difference to the lives of others, feeling in control of where I’m going and with more self-belief and confidence as a result. It’s not been without a few pretty hairy moments and some wrong turns along the way but I have made it happen.
If you’re still reading this, you may be thinking that this summary of my life story has turned a little bit self-indulgent. That wasn’t the intention, I promise! I just wanted to illustrate that if an ordinary, hard-working person like me with a big, bold dream can make it a reality, then there’s no reason why you can’t too. All it takes is a clear vision, a bit of guts and willpower as well as surrounding yourself with people you trust to keep you on the right path.
I am passionate about helping others realise and reach their full potential but in particular those who, for whatever reason, have hidden their light under a bushel and need some help finding it. We all have it within ourselves to be truly brilliant at what we do AND love what we do at the same time. As a life coach, I am here to help you leave all that fear and indecision behind and help you to find the right path for you, be it in a work context or any other aspect of your life.
I really look forward to working with you.
